Immerse yourself in the glorious Roman past of Split and Salona in Dalmatia.
Split was founded in the 4th or 3rd century BC. Founded as a Greek colony Aspalathos or Spálathos. The settlement took place from Issa, today’s Vis, which has existed since 367 BC.
It was only when Emperor Diocletian, who came from near Solin and built the palace, which he built for his residence in Split around 300, that the city blossomed. After the death of Emperor Diocletian, the Diocletian’s Palace was still a popular place to stay and also a place of exile for Roman politicians and rulers who had fallen out of favor. Around the magnificent imperial palace, the second largest city in Croatia – Split – emerged over time.
